Okay, so you have character A and character B.  Canonically characters A and B were made for each other, but you think that characters A and C are a better match.  This is all well and dandy.  But do you really have to go out of your way to show how immature and unchanging character B is in canon, even though most of your "facts" are just your opinions minus the "I believe that..." part.  And the one time you paired B with A, you killed B off in the first chapter and spent the rest of the fic showing how B had married A just because B wanted children and the marriage was loveless.  Meanwhile C was portrayed as a godly example of virtue, nevermind that he wasn't the main character and was one of the most conflicted characters in reality.

The Irish Times website goes free-to-view

Not long after the online version of the Irish Times newspaper appeared, some years back, it went subscription-only. At 70 Euro per year (or whatever they were charging), it was just too expensive: I stopped reading it.  I get a sense that other people may have had the same reaction, as last year (I think it was) they changed over to some kind of  “premium subscription” model. But that seems not to have worked either.

So now they’ve gone free-to-view. Well, good. And about time. The IT isn’t a bad paper — many Irish people would consider it the “paper of record”, at the top of the local “broadsheet” league — and it’s nice to be able to get at its electronic version again without having to pay through the nose for the privilege.

Meanwhile, the IT’s old gateway page at Ireland.com, which was originally just a front end for the paper, seems to be being retooled as sort of a portal site now. Makes sense: Ireland is something of a brand in and of itself, and wasting the domain name on a site that was never much more than an introduction to the newspaper seems in retrospect pretty silly.

Should be interesting to see how this develops.

Alt on Alliance side Moon Guard :3
Steeldawn

Steeldawn is a rogue Night Elf hunter. She has short green hair with light purple skin. She is rather tall. She has two best friends. Steel is not your average hunter. She likes to hunt for the sport. She wants to be a good hunter. She is a baby right now. She is only 6 levels old. She lives in Daranasses at the moment. When she is 12 levels old she is heading to Goldshire.

Yes I rolled another NE alt to play with on my server Moon Guard. I have too many alts. ^^’’’’’

What professions should I get for her?

How do I set my UI? I have a good addon to make my screen look bigger. I forget the name of it. But the character shows up like a figure instead of a portrait. My action bars are all on this little black bar along my with chatlog.

I'm desperate to find two books that I read in high school. If I returned to the school library, I think I'd be able to find where they were on the shelf, but it's a tad difficult to sneak in and searching their online catalogue hasn't turned up anything.

The first one was a relatively old English novel, about a girl who played the piano and had just discovered she was adopted. She was really distressed over this, and I can't remember why, but ended up on a holiday somewhere. During her holiday she was exploring some kind of history involving a Spanish princess, which paralleled her attempt to master Ravel's Pour Une Infante Defunte/Pavane for a Dead Princess.

The second one is a mid-nineties Australian novel, featuring a relatively unpopular girl befriending a popular guy who had just lost his perfect girlfriend - sort of (I think it was implied that the guy was gay, and there was a big question mark over where the girlfriend had gone). I think they worked together on a project or something, because the centerpiece of the novel was the mystery of Joanne Lindsey's Picnic at Hanging Rock. At some point they went to visit Joanne Lindsey's house, and I know they went to Hanging Rock several times, and the perfect girl's disappearance or something was related to the mystery at Hanging Rock. It was stretching for the same eerie feel as PaHR, and almost got there. Not a typical teen novel.

Can anyone help? Hopefully thanks in advance!

Random journaling thoughts/questions
Last night I had to go a-hunting for a new writing journal. And FYI, I keep three, one for journaling about everyday stuff, one for writing exercises and ideas, and one for weight loss.

Anyhow, I went to both Barnes and Noble and Borders looking for one and I found that I really don't like it when journals have flourishes on the pages inside, and it seemed they all did. Even the really fancy leather journals have the company watermark on them. Am I the only one who finds that distracting and bothersome? I don't like having anyone else's creative mark on a page, even if all I'm doing is scribbling down bits of stories.

I also had a couple of questions:

1. If I were to sell off some of my other journals that I bought but no longer have any interest in using, would anyone here want to purchase them? I'd basically sell them for way less than I got them for, and whatever the cost of mailing them is.

2. Has anyone here made the transition from lined to unlined pages? I'm still trying to get used to using a blank journal without lines after years of using lined pages.

3. Anyone got any special methods for motivating yourself? I've missed a few days for lack of enthusiasm and a feeling of deep down blah. I really want to keep going, and wondered what people here use for inspiration.

guilds

Hi all,
My nelf hunter alt hit 40 a couple of weeks ago and as yet has not joined a guild. I get offers all the time but am basically a solo player.  Even on my main nelf druid I have limited contact with my guild.

If you don't have a lot of friends on the game, how do you pick a guild? Is being a part of a guild crucial to game play in your opinion?  A lot of the posts I read here make me a little scared to get involved to be honest.  *grin*

Guild Woes

[rantpost]

My wife is a healing shaman (mostly decked out in kara or heroics gear and some PvP items) who has, unbuffed, +1700 healing, +2100 with buffs (I think.  I don't play the character).
Anyways, she's the best healer in the guild, not just because of gear but also because of her attentiveness and knowledge of the dungeon.  The guild does a nightly kara (or possibly ZA depending on the mood) run, and to try to get some more healers, they told her that they were bringing along a different one last night and that she would not be needed.  Well, two of the other 70s in the guild that did not get into the run organized with another guild to set up a run of their own with my wife as healer.
My wife's kara group is in the midst of the run when the guild notifies her that they don't have a healer after all.   She tells them she's already in a run.  They tell her it's not fair that she won't put the guild first and since she won't that they won't be able to do the kara run at all.  There was talk last night about the guild having to meet and decide whether or not she should be allowed to stay.
You see, we have lots of people who could be healers.  But because we already have a good one who shows up for every raid and run and puts lots of effort into collecting good gear, they don't.  My wife is the basket with all their eggs, and last night it came back to bite them and apparently it's all her fault.

4 Manning Victories
My guild is very small and, sadly, our fifth man to our core group is in Iraq (my hubby) but these guys have been my friends through 5-6 games and over 7-9 years so we play together to have fun and challenge ourselves.

Now, none of us are in T-anything gear, just pvp or dungeon drops but we've been trying to 4-man heroics in our limited playtime. Typically we 4-man heroic ramparts in an hour but last night, we 4-manned Botanica for the daily!

In case you are wondering, we're on Hellscream and the 4-man composition is Prot Pally, Holy Priest, Fire Mage and MM Hunter. :)

Are there others out there who like to push the limits of a less-then-full-team?

It's early; why don't we go ahead and get what happened at the SDCC Twilight panel out of the way, so we can deal with the rest of the Comic-Con awesomeness later? Short version: People are INSANE. And apparently raised by wolves. It's like the sound you hear at the gates of hell )

While we're here, great moments in inappropriate fan behavior )

Finally, a happy guild story!
A few weeks ago my husband and I just /gquit our guild of 2.5 years. Long story short, the people in that guild played a different game than us. They didn't care about furthering their knowledge of their characters or the mechanics of how to play them correctly, and then couldn't progress in Kara. Sure, growing pains happen, but this were some excrutiating pains. There are many other contributing factors but that is the main one, as it's a mistake that's been made more than once.

I put a request up on the boards looking for a mature guild who could still have fun. We're married and have a baby, so we can't do much other than run quests together but like to have fun conversations. I ended up joining Veritas Aequitas and omg, are they awesome. Despite our time restrictions, we've been taken through Kara twice (and made it 3 bosses further than the previous guild) as well as various instance runs. They're so understanding when my daughter starts getting restless in her sleep and I have to go nurse her back to sleep.

Anyway, I just had to squee about it. :)

Names: One Man's Tribute Is Another Elf's Plagiarism
Hello there, Tolkien fandom. Let's take this step by step.

I want to talk to you about names. Naming characters can be a huge issue and a source of much agonisation - meanings, pronouncability, etc; but there are ways to work around this. Firstly, make up your own - that's what sites like Real Elvish are for. Or you could try naming a character after someone famous who lived in Middle-earth's past.

Essentially, this is a longwinded way of saying that Arwen is not going to be calling her children Luthien, Elwing or Idril. (To adapt the Evil Overlord List - all lived lives fraught with danger and destruction and she would want her daughters to have a more positive mindset.)*

*That said, I will take any of those three over Sakura Anastacia Selena Moonflower, daughter of Aragorn and Arwen. Nit-picking is relative.

Character disconnect...
Has anyone else experienced this? You get a character up to a reasonable level, are happy with it, and then you realize you missed out on that completely cool quest chain and now it's all grey/you did everything you possibly COULD do wrong during rep grind and now you're looking 5,000 Coilfang Armaments in the face/you spent all that time working on dual-wield when you should've been working on 2H or vice versa.

And suddenly the character's no fun any more. You just want to butcher it and start all over.

Is this just a more advanced form of alt-itis, or something more sinister?

So T and I went to do some errands last night, continuing on in our quest to drop stuff off at Animal Ark but just missing. The air was like soup and I still had that Seroquil hangover.

The ride was interesting, in that T kept yelling at J, who kept punching K, at whom T kept going off. I still don't know what I'm going to do there. I pointed out to T that K had improved noticeably, cleaning her room without being asked, while C tries to skate off whenever she gets the chance. We were on a quest to get cleaning products and appropriate things to put in a care package, plus getting keys copied. First we stopped at a dollar store, then went to Home Depot, where I was much taken with those sheds they have. Then I forgot to have the keys copied and we went home, at which point I was so tired I could barely keep my eyes open. I gave permission for K to sleep at R's house. I and her mother both warned her that if she was running around in the street after dark she'd get sent home.

When I went in the door, I found a blue card from a church in the door. Having made myself clear on that subject to everybody who'd come to the door to convert me, I tossed it away and went into and laid down. I was asleep when someone pounded on the door.

It was C., wanting to know if I'd found the card. "Yes, I did. I'm trying to sleep."

Ten minutes later, it was C., again pounding on the door. "What?"

"I need to go the bathroom."

Oh my fucking God.

K came in to tell me that her mom wanted to talk to me, so I went outside, by now so tired my brain wasn't fully alert. I asked T where she was taking C and she said she was taking her to her uncle's house for something. "God, I'm trying to sleep. I'm going to have to get up to let her in."

T smiled. "You know those keys you got copied? Give her one and she can get in that way."

With visions of C turning on the lights and stumbling around, I gave her one, but T took it and said, "Oh, no, C, I'm holding onto this." Which was a relief. Oh, and did I mention K was there the whole fucking time? "Where's C going?"

T grinned at me. "You must be tired. I already told you and you asked me like three times already."

"I'm whipped," I said. "I'm going to go conk out."

"Get some rest."

"Drink some water," I said back.

So I went back into the house and laid down and turned off all the lights. I was just nodding off when the phone rang.

It was K. "What?" I demanded.

"Can I come over there and get some food?"

"No. I'm trying to sleep."

"BUt..."

"No."

"But whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....?"

"Good bye."

Thirty seconds later somebody pounded on the damned door, and the phone rang again. "WHAT?"

"I want to get some foooooooooooooooooood." (She hate at her grandma's. "R doesn't have any. THe cops took it all."

"I'm trying to sleep. Go away."

Five seconds later, she pounded again.

Jesus Fucking CHrist. "Go away. NOW."

I called T to tell her this, and she said, "Then tell her the sleepover's cancelled. It was really simple."

So I called K and told her to come home. There followed one of the most frustrating conversations I've ever had. The kid has selective memory and all the excuses down. "But I didn't mean to!"

"Yeah, well you did. IF you didn't mean to, you wouldn't have done it."

"But I said I was sorry!"

"Sorry means bullshit. It doesn't make it okay."

"I didn't know you were asleep! You answered the phone! You always turn the phone off!"

"Except when I hvae to get up to meeting code enforcement people for M. YOu were siting right there when your mom and I talked about this. You knew I was going to bed."

"Well, you answered the phone!"

"Yeah, and then I went back to sleep."

"I can't fall asleep that fast!"

"I'm not you," I said icily.

"But I didn't know you could do that!"

"Then you shouldn't have tried it in the first place."

"But I knocked quietly!"

She pounded on the damned door, not once but twice.

"No, you didn't. And now I'm REALLY FUCKING PISSED OFF, which is sure going to make going to sleep easier. Go your room and don't make any noise."

I knew I wasn't going to get any sleep after that. She cried and whined and kept going to the damned bathrom every thirty seconds to blow her noise---loudly----till I finally told her to take tissue with her into her room. I didn't feel any sympathy whatsoever. I defended her in front of her mom, I listen to her when she talks about boys, and she just doesn't give a shit when I'm trying to get any sleep. Cry your eyes out, I just don't care right now. Oh, and did I mention that her door shrieks when it's opened? Yeah, I don't think the constant movement in and out was accidental either.

C came home and yelled something to her mother from the front step, thereby negating the whole key thing. But I was impressed that she made her way through the darkened living room without one 'ow!' Then she got to K's room and they proceeded to have a talk in normal speaking voices till I yelled at them for that. By now it was eleven, and I'd been trying to sleep since nine o'clock. To say I was in a bad mood would be severe understatement. I told C to go to bed, at which point she called out to me, "One of the cats peed on my pillow."

"Put it in the dirty laundry basket."

Which, as I found out this morning, she didn't do. She put it in the hallway.

I also discovered that despite the forgoing events, K was not happy enough with bugging me repeatedly, she also texted me at midnight to ask about a midnight snack. I might have dozed off. If so, that's the only sleep I got at all last night.

In a few minutes, I'm going to wake them both up to give them a taste of their own medicine. I didn't get one fucking minute of sleep and I have a blinding headache, and I have to be on my toes this morning so I can avoid that city inspector finding out where I live. Then I have to run some more errands. Let's see how they like getting woken up. K sleeps till noon and shouts at C for waking her up. C sleeps till ten and isn't exactly quiet while she putters around the house.

I am not in a good mood.

ETA: I am in even a worse mood now that I've been up and around and discovered that C did not lock the fucking front door last night. "I didn't," she asked. Now, how could you forget that? You unlock the door, you come in, you lock the door.

Yay :D
So after numerous, numerous PuGs of Shadow Labs (pretty much all of them were good too...only a few wtf stupid people, nothing that stood out immensely though), I finally was able to hit revered tonight with Lower City and grab my Lower City Prayerbook and it put me at over +1200 heal!! Yay!! I'm excited for my resto druid, Nyciia. I love her. :) I'm on at weird times since I'm studying abroad across the world so getting a PuG can be super hard sometimes so it seems like it took longer than it should have. I feel so confident on her now which makes me feel super happy since I always used to be so unsure of myself in group situations since November when I started. It helps that everyone I group with complements my healing. :DD I need to suck it up and do a heroic. >( I need to get rid of my bad off-hand and my green ring which are my only two green pieces left.

Now...if only I could go to Kara with my guild. :( Unforutnately they do it on Wednesday nights and that's Thursday morning for me and I have class. I'm probably going to have to wait for the fall when I'm back at school and everyone goes back onto normal/non-summer schedules. If anyone raiding Kara starting from about midnight server is short on healers hit me up lol.

Next thing to work on: My Sha'tar rep. I'm halfway to revered and I need to get the Alchemist stone so I can make the uber Shattered Sun one. Unfortunately getting a group for any of those instances seems to be super hard. Usually there are like 3 other healers in LFG and I can never find a group. :( I also need to work on my Sporeggar rep which is probably going to be the worse rep grind ever. I'm halfway but killing Naga's is not so fun. Need to start runing UB stat.

Also: Does anyone know of a nice, casual guild on Kirin Tor-US Horde side? I have a little lvl 22 lock that I'm leveling up and it is very lonely because I know no one on Horde side lol.

Thanks for letting me ramble. :x Oops.
